Project - Zipper Sweater Light

Third in the three-part series of Nordic jumpers - danish patterns and nordic wool. This one is the Zipper Sweater Light. I'm excited to be finishing this series and using up all the wool I bought. I'll probably do a mini round of left over yarn projects from these three jumpers after that to really get down to zero again.

As seen in pattern guide:

Cast On. I did a quick gauge swatch and was bigger than gauge (I got 12cm instead of 10cm). I'm quite loose about my measurements, so instead of swapping needles or anything I'm just going down a size from S to XS. That'll do.

The yarn is a Swedish yarn, its quite thick and rustic like, meaning quite scratchy. Actually probably the scratchiest yarn I've worked with, but that's kind of what I'm going for with this jumper.

Currently on the ribbed collar section, taking a while obviously. Not in a rush though. I really liked the cast on method, which was Judy's magic cast on, where you keep a live set of loops at the bottom so you can continue knitting in the other direction, so you start your knitting something in the middle. What's cool about this is you don't get any cast on yarn tightness. I'm assuming I'm going to fold over the ribbing and cast off an edge at some point, but maybe you can knit both sides together and have a smooth and stretchy result. Exciting.

I may pause this project at some point and start my nephew's jumper, which I kind of planned to do first. I think this jumper will take a month, and I'd like to get out the nephew jumper sooner, and it's kid size.

Quick update

Yes it's 1.5 months later... I have finished the jumper now. Well almost. I took it with me while on holiday in Colombia. Great place to knit a thick wooly jumper in 30 degree humid heat. It went by quite smoothly, did a lot on planes and car journeys and sometimes on the beach. I like the Italian bind off methd a lot (and the Italian cast on I believe as well), which is two rows of double knit then a cast off with a large needle. It makes the finished edge really stretchy. I should start doing that for all my projects.

I have to redo the zipper sewing, as the first time, even though the pattern warned me, I still sewed the zipper too close to the knit fabric so the zip catches on the wool every time you zip. Will do this when I get home in the next few days then wash and block it for the final fit.

Final look.

Already loving it. It's warm, cosy, rough but not scratchy for me. Love the zipper installation. The second time round I gave the zipper enough width so its a smooth up and down ride. These pictures are pre blocking, I may stretch the sleeves a bit longer and the bottom to make it slightly bigger fit, but overall very happy!

Final jumper in the nordic series is done. What next? I've been musing about fair isle style jumpers, so colour work, which I've never really done...

Hi there I'm Charlotte from London and I am a Millennial hobbiest. By that I mean I love making things, for both the process and the outcomes. On this blog I talk about all the things I'm working on and learning each week. On some projects I will go into a bit more detail on what I did and my experience through it.

Some facts about me:

- I am not a perfectionist, preferring to complete something than to attempt to make something flawless.

- I am in a constant cycle of building up inspiration, executing the ideas, then winding down to reflect and regenerate.

- I am interested in almost anything that can be made from scratch using nature / natural materials.
