It’s nearly home time, and time for fresh September energy. For now, I’ve been working on knitting. The shawl is probably 70% done; I’ll likely use all the wool I have.
I also made a skirt from the fabric I bought in Nice, reverse-engineering a skirt I got in Mexico. I really liked the design, so I wanted to make a bunch more in different prints. Although the original is made of cotton, I bought synthetic materials, which are very flowy. I made one of the two fabric pieces I bought; the second I’ll finish in London.
I ‘“learnt” this technique of cutting the fabric by just ripping it down the woven lines. The shopkeeper did it when I bought the material. You just made a little snip, and then you can rip the rest of the way; it rips perfectly straight. This works in both horizontal and vertical directions. I didn’t clock this method before; I would spend so much time cutting the pattern pieces. This method is lightning fast for rectangular shapes.
Anyway, I’m forming an idea that this skirt design could be a good item in my future market stall… I’d like to make a few iterations of this in different prints. I’ve already bought more fabric online, cotton this time. I could also design (draw/paint/watercolour/digital) my own design and get it custom printed. That would be cool. I’ve gone for bold prints, strong colours. It might not be for everyone, but that’s what I think goes well with this style of skirt.
If I find a couple of other items to make, like a flowy pair of trousers and a top, I could have enough for a market stall. That’s something that’s been on my bucket list for some time. I just haven’t made anything that isn’t either crazy laborious, expensive to make, or of a sellable standard.
Side project - this little cross stitch Hedwig. I'll do two more drawings and then figure a way to finish off the edges back in London.

I’ve been planning for the field… I’ve ordered a couple of sprinklers that hopefully have a wide distribution range. It’s going to take a few iterations still to get all the connector parts right, but it’s a start. I had some more design ideas for the hugelmound, which is the next priority… more to follow. And my field neighbour, who previously said he didn’t want in on the borehole (I offered to split the cost and do some kind of joint borehole), has now said he wants water. So I will potentially help him tap into mine.

Hi there I'm Charlotte from London and I am a Millennial hobbiest. By that I mean I love making things, for both the process and the outcomes. On this blog I talk about all the things I'm working on and learning each week. On some projects I will go into a bit more detail on what I did and my experience through it.
Some facts about me:
- I am not a perfectionist, preferring to complete something than to attempt to make something flawless.
- I am in a constant cycle of building up inspiration, executing the ideas, then winding down to reflect and regenerate.
- I am interested in almost anything that can be made from scratch using nature / natural materials.
