I spent one day on the field this week spreading out more mulch, around my garlic this time and in the hedge line. The mulch pile is now gone and I’ve spread the leftovers neatly in situ, which will become a potential car parking space. I also bought an axe, to try to split the longer logs I have making up the paths. I attempted a few times to split the wood, but no success. Clearly there’s some technique involved in this, which I don’t yet have. Maybe the wood was too wet to split nicely. Not sure, but I’ll watch some wood splitting YouTube videos and come back for a round two attempt next time. I cleared a few more brambles and added to the woven fence, which is going great.

This was my last week before going away for two weeks, I won’t see the field for around three weeks. By the time I’m back I’m hoping for definitive new growth in a number of trees. Fingers crossed. My tree surgeon contact came to dump a whole load of new mulch, perfectly timed. I still have about 60 trees left to mulch and the hedge as well. The more woodchips the better. Saves me having to buy it.
My knitting has progressed a lot, I powered through the ribbed collar section and then the double knit zipper area. I enjoyed doing a simple pattern repeat, instead of the complicated cables and honeycomb pattern. So I smashed through that and finished the collar using every last bit of wool I have. I just have one entire sleeve to do, but the jumper will have to officially be on pause until the sheep get shorn again in June.
In the meantime… I’ve got a ball of cotton that I spun recently, and some leftover blue yarn. As my travel project, I’ll be knitting a pair of colourwork mittens. Not quite the season for it anymore, but I needed a smaller project as it’s only about 150g of yarn. I might not even have enough for the mittens, but let’s see. This will be my FIRST colourwork project, which is suprising to me. I’ve started already and loving it.
There won’t be much else going on while I’m away. I’ll probably start recharging a lot of creative energy and coming up with a bunch of new projects for when I get back. I know I’ll start the Kentucky stick chairs when I’m back.

I’m now away in Mexico and got started on the first mitten on the plane. I probably knit for 5-6 hours and then some more on Saturday morning and managed to finish it. I was so obsessed with the colour work pattern I just had to keep going. Really fun! I even had to redo the mitten in my first attempt; I did about 10cm and then unwound the whole thing because it was too small. The white colour is a hand spun cotton and inot stretchy at all, so needed to size up the needles to fit it over my hand. The mittens are kind of the only craft project I’ve brought with me, so if I blow through this in a few days I’ll have nothing left to do. Oh well.
I still need to block the mitten, meaning soak it and dry it, then the stitches should even out and look more consistent.

Hi there I'm Charlotte from London and I am a Millennial hobbiest. By that I mean I love making things, for both the process and the outcomes. On this blog I talk about all the things I'm working on and learning each week. On some projects I will go into a bit more detail on what I did and my experience through it.
Some facts about me:
- I am not a perfectionist, preferring to complete something than to attempt to make something flawless.
- I am in a constant cycle of building up inspiration, executing the ideas, then winding down to reflect and regenerate.
- I am interested in almost anything that can be made from scratch using nature / natural materials.
