Newsletter - I Get Knocked Down, But I Get Up Again

I paid the price for the “hard work in the field” two weeks ago. I’ve been ill with flu and a cough for almost two weeks, but it’s finally on its way out. I haven’t been that much progress on projects while I’ve been ill and on holiday. Next week I’ll hopefully be back to business as usual.

The Dagmar jumper has been slow going, but back in action. The body is finished and the first sleeve is started. I had spun two full balls of wool in preparation for the holiday, but didn’t do any knitting while away, so now I’m working through the balls I made, which is giving me a fair amount of runway before I need to spin again. My plan is to knit one sleeve, then knit the collar and zip, and then do the second sleeve, to keep it interesting.

The second storage box has been sitting half finished for a while now, but I managed to pick it up again towards the end of this week once I had enough energy. I’ve made the four frames, the lid and the base. I had to use all the wood I had available and even then get a bit creative with some leftover plywood. For the chipboard lid and base, I had to piece things together in a jigsaw like way to make it sure I had enough. It is looking a bit leftover-projecty, which was not really the aim. Actually I was hoping to make this box more water tight that the first one, but don’t think that will happen. I did had have to go to Wickes to buy some more feather edge boards for the sides and I bought a wheelbarrow for the field, which I’m hoping it going to make some jobs much easier that using the big trolley.

I haven’t been to the field in over two weeks. I’m very keen to go soon - once I finish the box. Plants are definitely starting to wake up now. I also had another pile of woodchips dumped from a tree surgeon, so I had two mini hills of woodchips to spread around. And it’s time to buy a big selection of berry bushes from the garden centre and plant those in before they start waking up.

My seed starting station is going reasonably well. The french beans have grown very quickly and are doing well. The peppers are doing very poorly, they’re always most trickiest seeds to germinate, I seeded about 40 plants, of which maybe 5 will grow. Brassicas are doing well, but need to be thinned. Peas and spinach have taken off well, and the tomatoes are just starting to germinate. All good things.

I'll leave this week with these bagels I made from the French baker's online tutorial.

Hi there I'm Charlotte from London and I am a Millennial hobbiest. By that I mean I love making things, for both the process and the outcomes. On this blog I talk about all the things I'm working on and learning each week. On some projects I will go into a bit more detail on what I did and my experience through it.

Some facts about me:

- I am not a perfectionist, preferring to complete something than to attempt to make something flawless.

- I am in a constant cycle of building up inspiration, executing the ideas, then winding down to reflect and regenerate.

- I am interested in almost anything that can be made from scratch using nature / natural materials.

Thanks for stopping by!
