As seen in Mexico, I loved the design of a skirt I bought, so wanted to recreate it in different fabrics. It was quite easy to reverse engineer; the original skirt was handmade as well, and I think designed by the same lady. I bought the fabrics while I was in the South of France, in a fabric shop in Nice.

I find it hard to choose fabrics. I keep getting it wrong, in terms of the color, print and material. All of it really. I usually go too bold or too heavy. In this case, I choose two bold print fabrics, which was fine; I think this skirt designs does well with a bold pattern. But I choose polyester fabrics, which has a cheap feel. To be honest, I went cheap initially so I could test out the design, so it was kind of intentional.
While making the skirts, I realised I could cut the pattern pieces to size by ripping the fabric in straight lines, which it so much quicker and straighter than cutting with scissors. It was a real revelation and sped up the cutting process so much.
The making of the skirts went pretty smooth. I had bought two different print fabrics, both polyester, but actually the feel of each one is a bit different and I definitely prefer the feel of the blue one. The pink feels extra synthetic.
Anyway, I think this was a good test project. I would like to repeat it, but with proper nice cotton fabric. Actually, I did order some more fabric online after the first two skirts. I ordered a poplin cotton, which sounded appropriate... Nope. Just no. It smelled like chemicals, because of all the strong dyes, the fabric feel stiff and rough. Just no no. Again disappointing fabric. I need to get better at this... And maybe only buy in person and really spend like half an hour in the shop making sure I've made the right choice.

The annoying consequence of not buying the right fabric, is that I have to make something that I know I probably won't like. My default is then to make scrunchies out of the leftover fabric, to waste as little as possible. I already have an obscene number of scrunchies, and now have added like 30 more. Anyone want any? Scrunchies seem to be something I can consistently make without feeling like its a waste of work. I never regret making them, its a great shop filler if I ever have a shop.
So in summary, I like the skirt design, I think it would be a great addition to my future craft shop, but I haven't found the right fabric for it yet.

Hi there I'm Charlotte from London and I am a Millennial hobbiest. By that I mean I love making things, for both the process and the outcomes. On this blog I talk about all the things I'm working on and learning each week. On some projects I will go into a bit more detail on what I did and my experience through it.
Some facts about me:
- I am not a perfectionist, preferring to complete something than to attempt to make something flawless.
- I am in a constant cycle of building up inspiration, executing the ideas, then winding down to reflect and regenerate.
- I am interested in almost anything that can be made from scratch using nature / natural materials.
