September is flying by and what am I doing? Sometimes it feels like I’m not making any progress, but that’s why I write this blog to help me keep track of progress and achievements and to have something to look back on. Even so, I’ve gotten out of the habit of posting weekly and it actually makes me feel like I’ve done even less in two weeks than I previously did in one. I could have various excuses, but I am getting back to where I was in terms of creativity, progress and inspiration.
Anyways, progress has been made on the field. I almost have the first iteration of the sprinkler system done. It’s been back and forth ordering hose pipe adaptors, which actually took some effort to think through. I’ve never designed an irrigation system, and I didn’t know much about pipe diameters, connectors and sprinklers, so it took some time to upskill myself, but I’ve put my plan into action now and I think it’s going to work. I’m hoping to finish it off this weekend.
Relating to the borehole, I want to make some kind of storage box / protection around the pump and plug cord, as well as store the generator next to the plug, but needs to have waterproof housing. So I’m attempting to design some kind of storage. Originally I thought a simple wooden box with hinges, similar to what I’ve made before. Then I thought, a bigger triangle shape structure would look cool, like a mini house, but then I might get planning permission complaints… My current idea is to weave a sort of dome out of wicker, and line it with felted wool or plastic to make it waterproof. The dome sounds more “forest” integrated and could blend naturally in the enviornment. It’s still in pure design stage at the moment. For it to happen though, I need my water trough to soak the willow sticks to weave, which has been on my to do list for a while. The ground is now soft enough to dig, and I think I’m going to put the trough next to the borehole to make it easy to fill… It doesn’t need to be deep, just big enough to submerge a bundle of sticks about 8ft long. I think the borehole area is going to become a gathering area, with storage, table and chairs, trough etc. That’s probably going to be my winter focus.
I’ve also been making my hugelmound, in the shape of a semi circle. Its going really well and looking good. It’s heavy work, running all the logs and woodchips down field. I’ve developed a hyper-awareness (small anxiety) of animals that may be hiding under every log and in the long grass. I saw 3 mice on my last visit, and a pheasant that jumped up from its nap as I walked past. It is a good thing there is lots of wildlife, I just need to get used to it.
My sewing projects have progressed, I just posted a bunch of project posts on my skirts and bags. Sewing isn’t my strong suit, but I try…
I haven’t been knitting (which is sad), because I don’t have yarn, only fleece. But, this week I found a yarn shop nearby, which has good quality yarn so that’s big win for me! I bought a few sample colours and am thinking about my next project… Potentially some colourwork knitted squares that I can assembled into a decorative blanket…
In the coming week, I want to do more on the field, and get myself weaving those baskets. Let’s see.

Hi there I'm Charlotte from London and I am a Millennial hobbiest. By that I mean I love making things, for both the process and the outcomes. On this blog I talk about all the things I'm working on and learning each week. On some projects I will go into a bit more detail on what I did and my experience through it.
Some facts about me:
- I am not a perfectionist, preferring to complete something than to attempt to make something flawless.
- I am in a constant cycle of building up inspiration, executing the ideas, then winding down to reflect and regenerate.
- I am interested in almost anything that can be made from scratch using nature / natural materials.
