Project - Bench Hook

Aim: Make a bench jig - as seen in Graham Blackburn's video, which can double as a mitre box.

This was a simple project, really a way to practice squaring edges with planes. All I did here was glue and nail the hook sections to the main board. The main consideration is making sure its exactly square, as I'll be using this a references for future projects.

I will probably main a few more of these at some point. This one is quite long so next one might be smaller. I've also seen bench hooks where the hook sections are smaller that the full width of the board so you can cross cut more easily and keep everything on the board.

Next I added saw cuts into the hook section, which will function as mitre box cuts, one of 90 degrees, and two of 45. I think I'll eventually also add in 30 degrees. I haven't tested it out yet, but I think it should work! The hardest part is that the cuts have to be perfectly accurate, as again these angles will determine the accruacy of future projects.

So next time i need to cross cut a piece of wood I can use these guides to easily make the cut accurate. That's really it for this project! Sometimes you need these quick projects to have the small wins during a larger project.

Hi there I'm Charlotte from London and I am a Millennial hobbiest. By that I mean I love making things, for both the process and the outcomes. On this blog I talk about all the things I'm working on and learning each week. On some projects I will go into a bit more detail on what I did and my experience through it.

Some facts about me:

- I am not a perfectionist, preferring to complete something than to attempt to make something flawless.

- I am in a constant cycle of building up inspiration, executing the ideas, then winding down to reflect and regenerate.

- I am interested in almost anything that can be made from scratch using nature / natural materials.
