Practice Dovetail Box

Listen

Read

This is a quick little project to practice dovetails before the real project of the tool cupboard. This turned out much more difficult than expected... Well, I did expect it to be difficult and given how hard it is to just saw in a straight line, a perfect dovetail joint definitely wouldn't be beginner-friendly.

I tried out a few joints, testing out different measurements and methods as I went. Hodge podging my way through making the joints fit, until eventually, I decided to downgrade myself to straight box joints. These are simpler 90 degree cuts, with much less room for error. Although still no piece of cake!

Eventually, I achieved a reasonable box joint, not a tight fitting one, but an alright looking one. For the tool cupboard, I'm going to do box joints, just keep it simple.

I don't have much scrap material, and since most of the practice joints were messed up, I haven't ended up with a fully formed box, but an assortment of poor joints. The practice has been done, but the final output has not. I am fine with that, and I think I'm ready to cautiously proceed with the tool cupboard...

Hi there I'm Charlotte from London and I am a Millennial hobbiest. By that I mean I love making things, for both the process and the outcomes. On this blog I talk about all the things I'm working on and learning each week. On some projects I will go into a bit more detail on what I did and my experience through it.

Some facts about me:

- I am not a perfectionist, preferring to complete something than to attempt to make something flawless.

- I am in a constant cycle of building up inspiration, executing the ideas, then winding down to reflect and regenerate.

- I am interested in almost anything that can be made from scratch using nature / natural materials.
