Wand Making

13 Sep

Having seen @TheGreatAlternative make wands I wanted to make some of my own. Although I've never tried wood carving, it doesn't look too complicated. I'm hoping this will be a nice small side project, while I get by woodworking started.

My first wand attempt, went well at first... then just as I was about to finish it, it snapped in half. The wood I collected was quite old already - I found it outside in the park. I honed a particular weak spot too much and it mad it too fragile. Might need to reconsider the wood I'm collecting. Long dead wood starts to decay / hollow out.

Time does fly, just when I think a project will be quick, its still been 10 days. Anyways I remade the wand with the same pattern as the first one, then I tried my hand at the Elder wand style (Harry Potter). Although the stick I chose wasn't particular straight as the elder wand is supposed to be. Really I was practiced make those intervalled bobbles up the wand. Its pretty rough, not perfectly rounded spheres, but a decent starter wand.

I bought some beeswax polish to bring out the wood a bit and give it a sheen, it worked fairly well.

Conclusions

• Carving a wand it a quick little projects (1-2 hours)

• I need finer sandpaper to improve the smooth finish

• Staining the wood a darker colour would look better for next time

• Keep practicing wink

Hi there I'm Charlotte from London and I am a Millennial hobbiest. By that I mean I love making things, for both the process and the outcomes. On this blog I talk about all the things I'm working on and learning each week. On some projects I will go into a bit more detail on what I did and my experience through it.

Some facts about me:

- I am not a perfectionist, preferring to complete something than to attempt to make something flawless.

- I am in a constant cycle of building up inspiration, executing the ideas, then winding down to reflect and regenerate.

- I am interested in almost anything that can be made from scratch using nature / natural materials.
