September Setup

7-13 September

This week I officially finished my new blog. All the functionality is finally done! There is always room for tweaks and improvements, but am happy with the current state and testing is done so I feel good to realise it. The last blocker is the domain name, which I can’t transfer to the new site until end of September for admin reasons... A few more weeks before it’s officially complete. All in all, it took 3-4 weeks work, with medium high intensity.

On my Rikke sweater, I’m running out of yarn, which is annoying. I will definitely need at least two more 100g balls, which I don’t think I’ve could’ve foreseen. Luckily this yarn is from Sadnes, and is easily available online. Will wait until I run out completely before I order more to know exactly how much I need. I’ve finished the first sleeve which used about 170g and now am back to finishing the body.

With the blog done, I can open up again to other projects, first on my list is Halloween costume making. I went to my local fabric shop for the first time and actually was quite happy with what they had. A good variety of fabrics I think I’ll be able to go back to a lot. I bought some white fur and muslin for the unicorn and ghost costumes. This projec is now on hold for a few days until I can measure the arms and legs of my niece and nephew. Am hoping to do that this weekend so I can have a good start on this project next week.

The other project high on my list is making the tool storage cabinet for my woodworking tools. My first big home woodworking project. After lots of research into pre cut wood, timber websites etc… I’ve come back to Wickes. Ha oh dear… It just gets crazy expensive when i look elsewhere. I think the timber for this project, had I bought a maple or cherry or whatever solid wood, would cost £1000+, maybe even a lot more. Which I can’t quite comprehend. I’m sure there are suppliers out there with good quality and price, but maybe you have do drive to lumber yards or something, and right now I don’t know where to look.

For now… Since this is a tool cupboard, and a starter project, I think i’ll go for Wickes, which I know is a no-go for carpentery, but am doing it anyway. This means I’ll have to buy sheets of plywood which are 1220mm x 2440mm. Nothing pre cut. But fine. There are so many cuts to do anyway of all kinds of sizes for this cupboard, i wouldn’t know how to input everything in a pre cut order. And that’s also why it would be much more expensive.  So…. Wickes it is. I had a look in the shop at the plywood before I bought online and the hardwood plywood looks ok. For 3 sheets, it will cost about £120.

I enrolled into pottery classes as well this week, I have a studio literally opposite my house and its quite discounted pricing so have enrolled for one term. I plan to work on my pottery wheel skills this time. Potentially make some ollas, which are pots you dig in your garden to fill with water for slow release irrigation. And I might make some candlesticks.

Then finally, I found a nice channel on YouTube called the GreatAlternative, he does some cool craft videos, which inspired me to try carving some wands from sticks! I collected a few from outside and started having a go. I almost was done with my first and then it suddenly snapped in half. I think the wood was already decaying and there was a weak spot that I made too thin. The proof of concept was going well though before it snapped! So I’ll be attempting that again soon.

Fun photo - was dogsitting this week

Hi there I'm Charlotte from London and I am a Millennial hobbiest. By that I mean I love making things, for both the process and the outcomes. On this blog I talk about all the things I'm working on and learning each week. On some projects I will go into a bit more detail on what I did and my experience through it.

Some facts about me:

- I am not a perfectionist, preferring to complete something than to attempt to make something flawless.

- I am in a constant cycle of building up inspiration, executing the ideas, then winding down to reflect and regenerate.

- I am interested in almost anything that can be made from scratch using nature / natural materials.

Thanks for stopping by!
